Hello! I am Paul, but most of my students call me Mr. Golm. I’m a secondary education teacher certified in English and mathematics.
I’ve been teaching in high schools across Michigan since 2011. Students and colleagues note my sense of humor and tech-savvy approach to learning.
I am also experienced in college application advising, creating professional development solutions, and designing courses for blended and online learning. Let’s work together!
My Values
Provide the Best
My teaching and design approach is informed by current literature on pedagogy and andragogy. No busy work exists in my curricular approach as I provide engaging and meaningful content. I strongly believe in personalized learning that meets the student at their level, to help each learner grow regardless of skill.
Be Nice to Everybody
My practice upholds student dignity, de-escalates conflict, and fosters respect in the classroom community. Trained in these techniques at every juncture of my professional career, I know what it takes to help learners feel comfortable and cared for so they are ready to learn. It all starts with simple kindness.
Make Learning Relevant
Students in my courses can connect their learning with their own goals and aspirations, improving engagement and participation. I build student choice, college planning, and career discovery into my English curriculum, so students always have a stake in their learning.
Have Fun
I love to create the best conditions for learning to happen. Often this involves modeling, think-alouds, and working alongside the learner. Through games, problem solving, discussions, and collaborative learning, students see my class as a place to explore. I’m often told by students that class “didn’t feel like learning.”
